Follow the A259 east out of Seaford to swoop between open pastures to Cuckmere Haven, where footpaths lead past salt marshes, water meadows and the lazy, bird-rich River Cuckmere to the sea. Look up the valley towards Alfriston and you’ll often see paragliders soaring over the High and Over chalk horse, a Victorian folly created by the landowner and his farmworkers as a prank.

There are several options for lovely walks, bike rides or river trips in this area, particularly from Exceat ) [map] on the east bank. Friston Forest, to the north, has glades of beeches and evergreens, while the Seven Sisters Country Park to the south preserves rare chalk grassland, home to round-headed rampion, scented wild thyme and Adonis blue butterflies. Canoes are available to hire with expert tuition.
